The Port of Trelleborg has an activity, with the aim of improving the handling of intermodal trains and rail connections, in the EU project ”Green FIT”. The completion of the rail works was completed in May 2025.
With the investments, some existing constraints in the port area were eliminated and the intermodal trains no longer need to be split in two parts. Therefore, the train handling operations towards the intermodal terminal have been significantly optimized.
Intermodal traffic means combining at least two of the transport modes rail, sea and road in a seamless transport chain. It is the most environmentally friendly way to get your goods and is also an efficient freight solution as it minimizes the handling of the goods during transhipment, which saves time.
Port of Trelleborg, with the ambition of being Europe’s most sustainable RoRo port, has worked to ensure that a larger proportion of trailers and containers choose the train to and from Trelleborg, a work that has had a fantastic development in recent years. In 2024 the increase was 17% compared with the previous year, which means that more than 46,000 trailers have traveled to or from Port of Trelleborg by rail. The port’s unique logistical location and with the possibility of combining the transport modes sea, rail and road, is a success factor.
The “Green FIT 2025” project includes works implemented during 2021-2024. The port builds two new large berths for next-generation Ro-Pax vessels and installs shore-side electricity connections. Also, it secures supply of clean energy for ships, port operations (and city hydrogen production) by installing two wind turbines. At the new berths, two wastewater reception facilities are deployed. A port wastewater treatment plant is constructed to allow for management of ship waste in an environmentally friendly manner. The port rail connections are reconstructed in a new layout, to ensure a faster handling of intermodal trains.
