LARS - completed 2022

Port of Trelleborg has submitted one of the three Swedish projects that has been selected for receiving EU financial assistance in the field of CEF Transport following the ‘Blending’ call for proposals.

The project, which has the work name LARS – Long Term Achievements Ready for a Sustainable Core Port in Trelleborg, will receive grants for the planned activities to be carried out until 2021 for the continued expansion and relocation of the port southeast.

The activities are:

1) Land filling works in the new Eastern port area

2) Construction of new berth no.13 and quay no. 14 including surrounding area and dredging

3) Filling works at berth no. 7

4) Bottleneck removal by road crossing solution over rail tracks

The project extends between August 1, 2017 and June 30, 2022.

Real Time Ferries - completed 2020

Real Time Ferries is an EU project aimed at developing a common and unified system for sharing information on departure and arrival times for ships. Those who register in Real Time Ferries share information to the system but have also the opportunity to retrieve real-time information that they then use to improve the service to their customers.

Port of Trelleborg participates in the project, together with Stena Line and Hogia, with the purpose of using the information to enable pre notification for pick-up or drop-off of trailers. Information about a ship’s arrival from the shipping company is linked to a unit booking in Port of Trelleborg and is made available to the haulage company. The haulage company completes the information via a web interface with the driver’s name and the tugmaster’s registration number and sends it back to Port of Trelleborg. At the same time, a work order is created to pick-up the device sent to the driver’s mobile phone through an app. When the device is unloaded in the port, the driver can enter the port via a QR code.

The project runs from May 25, 2017 – December 31, 2020 (3 years).

Clusters 2.0 - completed 2020

The project aims to develop sustainable and multimodal transport activities in the ScanMed corridor.
The focus is to have a coherent transport chain with various transport companies.
Port of Trelleborg contributes in the project with knowledge and ties together contacts.

Clusters 2.0 project has received funding from the
European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation
programme under grant agreement No 723265


The purpose of this project is to examine from an interdisciplinary approach how environmental differentiated dues and incentives in ports can reduce the environmental impact caused by all transport modes that call at the port. Both land and sea transport to and from the ports are addressed. The project’s main focus is at local level to improve the air quality in the seaport, but also climate impact is included. The long term goal of this work is to promote a shift to more environmentally efficient transport, vehicles, ships, technologies and alternative fuels. This is an important task in order to achieve the climate and environmental goals for transport.

The work will ultimately result in estimates of expected impacts on emissions to air, congestion and energy use in the introduction of environmentally differentiated fees and incentives.

Port of Trelleborg is a project partner in the role of “a big port in a small city” where we share the project our views and reflections.

Tentacle - completed 2019

Region Skåne cooperates in this project with other regions, authorities and businesses in the Baltic Sea region in order to develop efficient and environmentally friendly freight transports. An important starting point is to link to the main transport network TEN-T, which is identified by the EU.

The purpose of the project is to clarify how Skåne can benefit from the European initiatives and contribute to the implementation. Region Skåne focuses in this project on the cross-border transport exchange between Skåne and Poland.

Port of Trelleborg supports Region Skåne in the project.

Actors: Regions, national authorities, research institutions, innovation platforms and business in countries around the southern Baltic Sea. Region Blekinge is in charge.

The project extends between 2016 and 2019.

Scandria II - completed 2019

The project approach of Scandria®2Act follows an initiative of regions located along the Baltic Sea Region stretch of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Core Network Corridor for a harmonized corridor development. Representing urban as well as multimodal nodes along the corridor, regional development challenges associated with transport are addressed.

Main objective is to foster clean, multimodal transport to increase connectivity and competitiveness of corridor regions while minimising negative environmental impact induced by transport.

Port of Trelleborg supports Region Skåne in the project.

The project extends between May 2016 and April 2019 (3 years)

Project partners: 19 associated partners from Germany and Nordics, of which we are one.





MoS Sweden-Poland Sustainable Sea Hinterland Services III - completed 2019

Project partners are Port of Trelleborg (Coordinator), Port of Szczecin Swinoujscie and TT-Line AB.

The project aims to increase the efficiency and improve the integration in the corridors Scandinavian-Mediterranean and Baltic Adriatic Corridor, increase cooperation between the parties in the corridors and create a greater opportunity for continued growth in Poland, not least in terms of intermodal traffic, as well as improving connections between the ports and hinterland.

The activities proposed for this project constitute part of the development of the Port of Trelleborg’s relocating, which is needed to meet the increasing volumes of traffic. 

The project consists of the following activities:
1) A new check-in area and marshalling yard in the Port of Trelleborg
2) new rail access gate for ICT control and monitoring and inspection of cargo in Trelleborg
3) land filling preparation for marshalling yard
4) new check-in system of the ferry operator TT-Line in the Port of Trelleborg
5) a pilot activity envisioning PNDS, the Port Navigation Docking System, in the Port of Swinoujscie

The project extends for three years, between February 7, 2017 and December 31, 2019.

Wind power project - completed 2016

Launched 2014, in the effort to use renewable sources of energy as far as is possible, the Port of Trelleborg has installed six vertical wind turbines. The annual production, about 50,000 kW/year, covers the energy requirements of the rainwater plant’s pump station. The turbines are located farthest out in the new port. The project is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.

SWEETRIGA - completed 2015

The project is about moving traffic from road to rail, shipping or a combination of both. The project looks at the connecting train from Stockholm, via Trelleborg and then continue on down to one of our four partner ports. Modal shift must be clearly recorded and the contribution is 2 EUR / t 500 km. Conditions are available on annual average tonne for the grant to be paid.

Marco Polo

Sustainable Trelleborg-Swinousjcie MoS Services - completed 2015

Project partners: Port of Trelleborgs, Swedish Transport Agency, Port of Szczecin Świnoujście and Swinoujscie Ferry Terminal. The project, covered works and studies with the objective to develop the Motorways of the Sea infrastructure at the Port of Trelleborg, upgrade ICT in Trelleborg, and prepare grounds for the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering facility at Świnoujście.

By the extension of its fairway, the Port of Trelleborg will ensure safe and efficient ship manoeuvres and increased sea-based capacity and accessibility. New breakwaters and two pier heads will be built, and four berths will be prepared for on-shore power supply at the Port of Trelleborg.

The intermodal terminal will be enlarged and upgraded in the new eastern part of the Port of Trelleborg. Cleaning of the ports storm water and one third of the storm water from the city will give a 70% removal of pollutants before the rainwater entering the Baltic Sea thanks to modernisation of the infrastructure.

A study on the LNG organisation will be commissioned by the Port of Świnoujście and a study on IT will be made by Swinoujscie Ferry Terminal. When these investments are completed, the maritime link between Trelleborg and Świnoujście will be able to prepare for proper handling of the shipping lines’ ferries, which are expected to be up to 40% larger than the currently deployed ships.

SWIFTLY GREEN - completed 2015

The Swiftly Green Project included ten partners from six countries who together produced a toolbox for how transport and logistics can be carried out sustainably with a minimal impact on our environment. Solutions were also produced for how various authorities and companies can be involved.
Lead partner was Lindholmen Science Park AB, Sweden.

MOS LNG IN BSP II - completed in 2015

Partners: Port of Helsingborg, BPO, Port of Trelleborg, Sundsvalls Logistikpark, Port of Rostock and Klaipedas Nafta.

The main objective of the Action is to minimize pollution by maritime transport in the Baltic region through support to widespread use of LNG while maintaining the competitiveness of maritime transport in relation with other modes of transport.

The Action encompasses pre-investment studies, related technical design, associated permits and risk assessment procedures for LNG bunkering infrastructure (land based and floating) in partner ports, in a harmonized manner.

Lead partner was Port of Helsingborg.

Green EFFORTS - completed 2014

Green EFFORTS project had as primary objective to reduce energy consumption and improve energy mix to make it cleaner and to develop standardized control systems by modelling. Simulation models was developed to monitor the processes and to get a detailed picture of the energy consumption. The project also developed an implementation strategy together with education and motivation programs to increase awareness of energy consumption and its impact on the environment and the economy. Green EFFORTS was based on the material that was developed by the universities in a Europe based projects that were completed in 2009, called Effective Operations in Ports. Port of Trelleborg are delighted to have been selected to participate in the project together with partners with proven expertise in the various issues relating to environment. We also see that it is a supplement to the project we are responsible for – Clean Ship and even in our efforts to reduce energy consumption. Participation strengthens the port’s position as the Baltic climate smartest port. Concretely, this means besides we must help to address environmental issues that we also get grants for something that we would perform whatever in our environmental plan.

MoS Green Bridge - completed 2014

A far-reaching project that includes the ports in Trelleborg, Lübeck and Rostock, and TT-Line. To modernise and adapt the ports’ capacities for larger, more environmentally friendly vessel, new breakwaters, a new intermodal terminal, rainwater cleaning, the new ferry quay 10 and more are being built.
Lead partner was TT-Line.


CLEANSHIP - completed 2013

On September 2 and 3 in 2013 the final conference of the EU project CLEANSHIP was held, where the Port of Trelleborg has been the Lead Partner. The project lasted for 3.5 years and resulted in several hands-on technical and administrative solutions for a cleaner Baltic Sea. We focused on the design of an environmental index for the Baltic ports, a system of environmentally differentiated port fees, technical solutions and infrastructure to alternative ship fuels, electrical connection of moored ships and facilities for receiving sewage from ships. Our hope is that the CLEANSHIP report, which contains our recommendations regarding a greener shipping, greener ports and sea ports, will be respected and that our results will be exploited and disseminated to stakeholders around the Baltic Sea.
The project had 50 partners whereof 20 partners with budget and Port of Trelleborg was lead partner in the project.

CleanShip Baltic Sea Region

MoS Königslinien - completed 2012

Together with the Port of Sassnitz, Scandlines AB and Scandlines AG, the rail link between Germany and Sweden was upgraded to be able to increase the transport capacity to and from Central Europe and Italy.
Lead partner was Port of Trelleborg.


NIB - wastewater station completed 2012

To be able to receive vessels’ wastewater, a special station has been installed at each berth. Instead of dumping wastewater at sea, it is dealt with by the local authority’s sewage plant. This project was founded by Nordic Investment Bank (NIB).

Vision 2005 - completed 2009

Our second TEN-T projects that we ran ourselves and in line with our Vision 2005. A new railway berth was completed in mid-2007. Modernization of check-in and check-out areas were completed in spring 2007. The new logistics centre was launched, and the first phase of the new intermodal terminal as well. In total, the Port of Trelleborg in a few years will have 10 RoRo modes for handling both road to rail vehicles. This extension enables a fifty percent traffic growth. The rebuilding of this phase was completed in 2009 and cost about 450 million, making it the largest investment in the port’s history. The background to the project is that the Port of Trelleborg believes in a strong increase in shipments in the South Baltic area over the next few years as a result of increased trade, not least with the EU’s new Member States. We also believe that the future freight routes between Scandinavia and Europe now is taking shape. With the implementation of the “Vision” in 2005 is the port well equipped to meet the future transport demand.

PORTKORT - completed 2006

One of the port’s first EU project was a TEN-T project, the Portkort-project with a focus on IT and security. The project was completed in 2006 and the background of the project was that we needed to get effective control of the units that arrived at the port. In this project, we developed a new cargo handling systems with computers used in the reach stackers and tug masters and a security monitoring in the form of our first inspection facility.
