Environmental program

The port’s environmental program includes the following overall objectives.

Efficient port logistics– for less emissions and noise

Negative environmental impacts such as emissions to air and water, noise and climate impact will be minimized by a high level of service and efficient port logistics.

Through more efficient loading and unloading the ferries’ mooring time can be shortened. Even the trucks’ idling can be reduced, which reduces emissions in the port area. The construction of new berths in the southeast aims among other things to rationalize cargo handling further so that the ships’ mooring times can be reduced.Hamninlopp 030

In 2014, the new ferry berth 10 with associated storage areas and ramps was completed – a major step in the development of efficient loading / unloading operations. Ferry berth 10 was taken into operation in 2015 and the inner ferry berth 2W could thus be closed for permanent operation

The construction of intermodal terminal in the south section was completed in 2014. The expansion resulted in a more concentrated intermodal terminal operations, reducing the driving distances of working vehicles and reducing noise for adjacent real estate.

We work long-term to increase the share of combined units go by rail, which contributes to reduced emissions regionally and nationally.

Good environmental performance - of vehicles and other equipment

The port constantly renew their vehicles and other equipment so that its environmental performance is at the forefront of technological development.

Our own working vehicles should maintain the highest environmental class. The largest machines, tug masters and reach stackers, stand for 90 percent of the emissions from the port’s fleet of vehicles. Modernization has quickly produced results in terms of lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions. Speed regulation and idle detent are available on all towing vehicles.

Carbon dioxide emissions from the port’s own vehicles related to handled volume of cargo has dropped steadily since 2010.

Close collaboration - with customers and other stakeholders

In the dialogue with customers and other stakeholders the port will reduce environmental impact and thus strengthen its competitiveness.

Onshore power supply
Onshore power supply is an area that requires a close dialogue between the port and shipping companies to be successful. Onshore power supply of berthed vessels would significantly reduce emissions of air pollutants from vessels and be important for the general air quality.

Landel 036We offer the shipping customers onshore power supply at all the berths in regular operation. Since 2017 Stena Line’s ferries M/V Skåne and M/V Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from Trelleborg to Rostock have plugged into onshore power when moored at quay lasting more than two hours. Also Unity Line’s ferry M/V Gryf, from Trelleborg to Swinoujscie, is prepared for onshore power supply.

Waste water
To contribute to the reduction of eutrophication of the Baltic Sea, the goal is to ensure that all the ferries will leave their waste water in port.

The port can now receive ferries’ black and gray water in all the ferry berths in regular service via direct connection to the drainage system to the municipal sewage treatment plant. Black and gray water has for several years been provided by Stena Line’s vessels.

Storm water
Through extensive investments in stormwater facilities, stormwater is purified from both the port’s existing surfaces as well as the new surfaces created in the eastern expansion. The new spaces added through the filling rate has been at a level that is adapted for predicted rise in sea level.

In 2014 three new sedimentation tanks (a total of 13 000 m3) and two independent treatment facilities were in use. Trelleborg Municipality and the Port of Trelleborg have in collaboration invested in these facilities, which means significantly improved stormwater drainage for eastern Trelleborg and thus reduced risk of floods while stormwater from about 100 hectares of the city’s surfaces and 50 hectares of the port’s surfaces is cleaned. The purification effect is expected to provide 70-90% separation of pollutants in the stormwater.

Employees with good environmental skills

Personal 007This is a continuous process that involves awareness and knowledge. Among other things, we have completed the training program for eco-driving as part of efforts to promote environmental awareness, reduce fuel consumption and provide safer and calmer driving. The programme focuses on machinery, especially our tug masters, which accounts for nearly 80% of total fuel consumption in the port’s own business.

The result was a reduction of about 0.4 liters per hour. Based on 2000 operating hours per year and 15 terminal tractors it gives a saving of 12,600 liters per year. The whole effect is not expected to be fully, but together with other technical measures it is assessed to provide fuel savings of 36,000 liters equivalent to 94 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Another important area is that all affected employees are well trained and informed about what to do in different emergencies. For example, how the decontamination equipment should be used and how the shut-off devices for stormwater to be handled.

Environmental business - an ongoing process

20140813 Nya hamnbilder från Pierre F 037The port must constantly work to ensure that the operations are environmentally friendly with regard to energy, water, chemicals and hazardous waste.

Energy
The use of energy and natural resources is a significant environmental aspect, and the port has begun a fairly extensive project for more efficient resource utilization. In this area there are clear savings targets set for the coming years. An example of a goal is for wind and solar together to produce 50 percent of the port’s own electricity needs in the new port.

Protection of water and land

There are well-functioning routines for the port to avoid emissions to water and land, and what must be done if emissions would take place. For example, all the stormwater drains on the new padded area can be closed simultaneously through a maneuver at risk of emissions. In addition, there are two so-called emergency plates where any leaking devices can be placed. Several containers with decontamination Equipment are placed in the port area. All appropriate staff are well trained in how to act in different emergencies.

In the port, relatively small amounts of chemicals are used. Responsible staff work actively to select good products from an environmental and work environmental perspective.

Waste and hazardous waste from the port operations and the vessels are sorted at specific environmental stations that have marked containers for each faction in order to promote sorting and achieve maximum percentage recycling.
