Air quality

The port operation generates emissions from vessels and vehicular traffic. In collaboration with IVL, we have performed our own measurements of nitrogen dioxide and particles in the air since 2006 and sulfur dioxide since 2008. From 2016 the monitoring of air quality is made in cooperation with the Municipality of Trelleborg.

Current measurement values can be followed via http://trelleborgsluft.se

Measured annual average of nitrogen dioxides are below the environmental quality standard, but exceed the Swedish environmental target specification. The levels have been stable at roughly the same values since the records began, and nothing indicates that environmental quality standards will be exceeded.

The particle levels are below the environmental quality standard, but exceed the Swedish environmental target specification.

The levels of sulfur dioxide have dropped significantly since the ferries in 2008 began using low sulfur fuel at berth and are now far below the environmental quality standard and also under the Swedish environmental target specification. A further significant improvement occurred in 2015, when the requirement for low-sulfur fuel (0.1%) was introduced.

A continuous follow-up is important to see the results of environmental measures and also to follow up the development.
