The freight volumes broke new records in Scandinavia’s largest RoRo port in Trelleborg

Despite an ongoing pandemic, the freight volumes in Scandinavia’s largest RoRo port reached new record levels in 2020 and increased by almost 2 percent compared to 2019. From week 26 to week 53, the Port of Trelleborg has had great numbers with an average increase of 11.1 percent compared to the same period in 2019, and the upward trend looks set to continue.

The freight volumes broke new records – the passenger volumes decreased
In 2020, 773,000 trucks and trailers passed Port of Trelleborg, which is an increase of 1.7 percent compared to 2019. The increase in the freight volumes can be explained by the changing behavior of the consumers in trade, due to the ongoing corona pandemic which has reinforced the trend of increasing e-commerce and investments in houses and homes.

The passenger volumes, on the other hand, have dropped drastically during 2020, but Port of Trelleborg can also see a positive development in the number of passengers and passenger cars in the past six months. During 2020, the number of passengers decreased by 31.6 percent and the number of passenger cars by 42.2 percent compared with 2019. Stena Line closed the line to Sassnitz in April 2020, which affected the number of cars and passengers and also the number of arrivals and departures. Port of Trelleborg now operates the four destinations Travemünde, Rostock, Swinoujscie and Klaipeda.

– We have a market-leading position on the routes to and from Rostock and Travemünde that have been further strengthened in 2020, but it is also very gratifying that we are growing on the routes to and from Swinoujscie and Klaipeda. In terms of freight volumes in the traffic to and from Poland, we remain the largest, says Jörgen Nilsson, CEO, Port of Trelleborg.

In terms of the intermodal traffic, it has also been very successful in 2020 with an increase of 72 percent compared with the previous year, which means that almost 27,000 trailers have traveled to or from Port of Trelleborg by rail. Our ambition is to increase this volume even more in 2021.

The port expansion enables increased volumes in the future
Port of Trelleborg is currently undergoing an extensive port expansion and relocation to the southeast. The port expansion follows the plan and ferry berths no.13 and no.14 are now ready and the construction of ferry berths no.11 and no.12 is expected to be completed by December 31 in 2021.

The forecasts for the port until 2026 show an estimate of 1.8 million vehicles and a total of almost 2.5 million passengers passing through the Port of Trelleborg.

 – The port is investing to be able to receive larger, more efficient and modern vessels and with 50 hectares of new land, the freight flows will be able to be handled even more efficiently. Port of Trelleborg will be competitive for both increased freight volumes and passenger traffic in the future, says Jörgen Nilsson.

Port of Trelleborg has from a transport perspective a very favorable geographical position in relation to continental Europe. The port has a high frequency in number of arrivals and departures per day and the three shipping lines TT-Line, Unity Line and Stena Line have 13 ferries that operate 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
