Volumes increase across all traffic segments at Scandinavia’s largest RoRo port

The positive trend continues at the Port of Trelleborg. Figures for the first nine months of the year show increased volumes across all traffic segments. Trucks, trailers, passenger cars, passengers and rail freight volumes have all increased compared with the same period last year. This development points to a recovering transport market and reinforces the port’s position as one of Sweden’s most important transport and logistics hubs.

The Port of Trelleborg handles approximately 10 percent of Sweden’s imports and exports and is the market leader in the RoRo segment. More than one in four trucks and trailers passing through Swedish ports do so via Trelleborg.

As Sweden’s southernmost port and gateway to continental Europe, Trelleborg is strategically located to facilitate efficient transport between Scandinavia and Europe. With frequent ferry connections to Rostock, Travemünde, Swinoujscie and Klaipeda, the port offers high capacity, flexibility and reliable transport solutions around the clock, all year round.

– We are encouraged by this development, although it is still too early to say that the market has definitively turned a corner. After several years of more subdued market conditions, it is encouraging to see freight volumes continuing to increase. This demonstrates that the Port of Trelleborg remains highly competitive and is well positioned to meet the future needs of the transport market, says Malin Collin, CEO of the Port of Trelleborg.

Positive Growth Across All Traffic Segments

During the period January–September 2026, the port handled 586,000 trucks and trailers, an increase of 3.2 percent compared with the same period last year.

The passenger car volumes increased by 4.3 percent, while the passengers rose by 3.7 percent, bringing the total number of passengers passing through the port so far this year to more than 1.3 million.

Rail freight also showed positive development. Conventional rail freight increased by 7.1 percent, while intermodal traffic, where trailers are transported by rail, grew by 3.7 percent.

The growth in rail freight is particularly encouraging, as intermodal transport solutions are a strategic priority for both the Port of Trelleborg and its customers. By combining sea, rail and road transport, the port helps create opportunities for more efficient and sustainable freight transports.

– We have made long-term investments in the infrastructure and sustainable transport solutions to meet future transport needs. With our capacity, frequent connections to continental Europe and strategic location, we are well positioned to continue growing together with our customers, concludes Malin Collin.
