Another EU project is completed – focus on environmental investments and infrastructure development

Today, the Port of Trelleborg organized a final conference around one of our EU projects, Green FIT 2025, “Clean and Efficient Multimodal Hub in the Port of Trelleborg”, which has extended from January 2021 to September 2025.

The following activities are included in the project:

1) Construction and validation of 2 new large ferry berths (no. 11 and 12)

2) Installation of two wind turbines in the port to provide electricity to ships

3) The construction of a wastewater reception facility and a treatment plant to support waste management

4) Improved handling of intermodal trains and rail connections

The new infrastructure gives the Port of Trelleborg great advantages in being a modern and sustainable port, thanks to the Green FIT project.

The project is co-financed from the European Commission’s fund for a connected Europe, the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

The representatives from the CEF Secretariat, the Swedish Transport Administration South, Wilhelm Borchert GmbH, Trelleborg Municipality, Trelleborgs Energi, TT-Line and the Port of Trelleborg participated in the meeting. Landlord Ulf Sonesson then guided the meeting participants on a bus tour to take a closer look at the various investments in the port.

The “Green FIT 2025” project includes works implemented during 2021-2024. The port builds two new large berths for next-generation Ro-Pax vessels and installs shore-side electricity connections. Also, it secures supply of clean energy for ships, port operations (and city hydrogen production) by installing two wind turbines. At the new berths, two wastewater reception facilities are deployed. A port wastewater treatment plant is constructed to allow for management of ship waste in an environmentally friendly manner. The port rail connections are reconstructed in a new layout, to ensure a faster handling of intermodal trains.
